BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

What is Brazilian Jiu jitsu?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu or BJJ as it’s more commonly referred to as, is a grappling-based martial art and a fantastic self defence system that is centred around the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that forces them to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground as opposed to a standing position, much of the training focuses on the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions. BJJ as the name suggests, originates from Brazil and was founded by the Gracie family. They modified judo and traditional Japanese jujutsu to create the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Who should I practice BJJ?

Our BJJ program is designed for men and women from absolute beginner’s through to advanced students. No experience necessary, our highly decorated head coach Chris Wase will guide you along the way.

Get involved if you want:

Street Self Defence
In a world that is increasingly getting more violent, learning a martial art such as BJJ can prove to have many advantages. BJJ teaches you about leverage and proper technique which enables a smaller person to successfully defend themselves against a larger adversary. A large number of street altercations end up on the ground, and through practice in BJJ you will gain the skills in such things as joint locks and chokeholds which can be used in defending yourself successfully against a bigger, stronger and heavier assailant.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Entering BJJ competitions are great for testing your skill and endurance levels. Even if you are training for the self defence aspect of BJJ stepping onto a mat to face an unknown opponent in front of your teammates and a random crowd is stressful. That stress results in a ‘fight or flight’ reaction, where tons of adrenaline and other hormones get released into your system. Not a bad real life simulation to test yourself in, with the knowledge that the bouts are controlled with a referee and rules to follow. Competitions also give you some great goals to work towards in your BJJ career.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Mixed martial arts as the name suggests is the name of another style of martial art competition often held in a cage or octagon made famous by the UFC. MMA encompasses stand up martial arts like Muay Thai and boxing with ground martial arts like BJJ, wrestling and judo. Learning BJJ with us can add a great component to your mixed martial arts game whether you’re already a competitor or if you’re looking to step into the cage for the first time.
